History

Frimurarehotellet was inaugurated 1st May 1878.

The facility was previously used as an elegant private estate, where amongst others, the last commendant of Kalmar, Peter Fredrik Kock, lived.

When the hotel was inaugurated at first, it could only offer a total of 18 guestrooms, all of which were considered highly tastefully decorated. In the years to come, the popularity increased and the need to expand grew to a culmination, at which point at an expansion became a necessity. In 1928 the total amount of guestrooms had become 35.

The foundation of the building was laid down in the year 1876. On the 22nd of May, the Free Masons went in a procession from the old lodge building to the construction site. In the southeast corner of the construction, a golden trowel, made by the A. Rosin brothers was placed, with an inscription, to commemorate the moment. The facility was originally designed by the famour architect J.F. Åbom, who had previously designed such buildings as The Royal Dramatic Theater, Berns Salons, South Theater in Stockholm and a wide plethora of churches, castles and mansions. The house was extendedly rebuilt towards the south, to its current look, in the year 1928.

The facility itself is owned by the Free Mason Order in Kalmar, while the business itself is privately owned.

Current owners of the Frimurarehotellet, Marianne and Owe Rylander, has been running the business since the turn of the year 1996/1997.

The renovation of the hotel is progressed on a continual basis, while sustaining the authentic 19th century environment and atmosphere.

The certification was approved by AB SEMKO. During the year of 2000, we worked hard with the environmental certificationprocesses of the ISO 14001 standard. We obtained our certificate in environmental supervising system according to ISO 14001 during a ceremony April 11th 2000. Detta medför att vi i skrivande stund är tredje hotellet i Sverige som är dubbelcertifierade inom dessa ISO-standarder. This means that we are (currently) one of four hotels in Sweden which has been certified by both these ISO standard certificates.
